Description : Ji Han Jae was one of the earliest students of Choi Yong Sul (14th Dan certificate, reached 8th Dan under Doju Choi). He also trained with the Sam Rang Do Tek Gi master referred to as Taoist Lee, who taught him the high kicking techniques of Taekkyon, traditional Korean swordsmanship, throwing weapons, and the short staff and long staff techniques of the Samrang-do. He also began practicing meditation and low breathing. Finally, through his progression in the martial arts, Ji Han Jae invented some special techniques as rope techniques, and cane techniques (he designed them when he had a leg injured during a Yawara class). Having taught Yu Kwon Sul for two years in his An Moo Kwan in Andong, he decided (with the help of Taekkyon master Kim Moo Hong to design the kicking techniques) to mix all his techniques into a new martial art which he called Hapkido and established the first ever Hapkido school in Seoul, named Sung Moo Kwan. There is a controversy about who first coined the name "Hapkido" : Ji Han Jae and his students say he first used the name Hapkido, however Seo Bok Seob said in an interview that he and Choi Yong Sul first used the name. Nevertheless, this question is irrelevant since both taught different styles of Hapkido, which we can name "traditional" and "modern" Hapkido. Anyway, nearly all the Hapkido styles that emphasize high kicking, weapon techniques and meditation certainly derivate from modern Hapkido.
